7lbs / Sqft

Seven Pounds per square foot...  That's what I figure plaster weighs.  I took on another wall (approx 180sqft without doors etc), and it filled 25 bags at approx 50lbs per bag.  Now those of you that have done this know that the plaster falls, you shovel, load into a truck, and then unload at the dumping grounds.  So the room I am currently working on has a total wall and ceiling area of 852sqft.  Lets do the math!

852sqft x 7lb/sqft = 5964lbs (just shy of 3 tons).  If I multiply the weight be the times I have to shovel, load and unload we are approaching 9 tons....

No wonder I'm so tired all the time - this just in - Plaster is heavy.

Now this is what you want to see in your walls...

No junction box, no wire nuts - just copper on copper with black tape.  I found 3 of these little fire starters today.  The discovery confirms to me that ripping the walls open is the right thing to do.

Worked a bit on the staircase today.  I have a few treads which has slipped out of the risers.  I managed to lift 2 back into place, but apon further investigation I believe part of the cause is poor support of a main wall in the basement.  I will need to do some lifting and supporting in the basement which we plan on doing further down the road.

That's all for now, time to start a fire - we're going to hit -26C tonight...

I hate it...

It's been about 12 years since I have done any lathe and plaster removal and although I knew it wasn't "fun", I completely forgot how much I hated it.  My eyes and lungs are burning, realistically I have thousands of pounds left to remove, shovel, load and dump from every room.   Insult to injury, our local dumping grounds charges to dispose of this...
