Under the carpet...
I wrote earlier on my plans to find out what was under all the beautiful red and green carpets in our home. I ripped up the green from the staircase, and I have to hand it to the construction folk of the 70's... they installed the unsderlay and carpet to last. On average, I pulled 30 staples per stair for the underlay alone, and the carpet was also full of nails. So here is the pre-pic as well as the now-pick. The fully restored pic will be taken far off into the future, when we get the courage to refinish the stairs. I am guessing, finishing a staircase is tricky business as you would have to commit your family to living on the lower floor only for the duration...

So last night, with the assistance of some "home renovation music" I ripped up the floor in what we have come to know as the "log room". This poor room is really lost, as it matches no style in the rest of the home, nor does it exibit any qualitlies of a 1881 farm house. It is very dark, with a cheesy plastic "fake fireplace and mantle" - complete with an electric insert, which terifies me. And so we plan, in fact to lighten the room up, by replacing the floors, and perhaps white washing the wood walls. The fireplace will be replaced with book cases, and we hope to install a much larger window as well. Sadly it appears the original floors were ripped out and replaced with plywood. On the plywood, a delightful tile, and finally the carpet. This will be the interior winter project.
